We imagine a world where we would like to believe that all children have a home. The local government is tasked with and obtains funding to provide for children that find themselves in unfortunate circumstances. That’s what orphanages and the foster care systems are for…to care for children that have no parents. And these systems must be working great because after all, when was the last time you saw a homeless child? That National Conference of State Legislatures estimates that “…on a given night there are approximately 1.3 homeless youth living unsupervised on the streets” (http://www.ncsl.org/research/human-services/homeless-and-runaway-youth.aspx). So either they are mistaken or we are grossly out of touch with what is really happening to our youth in America.
Because we don’t see homeless youth on the streets, we assume that either (a) there is no such thing as youth homelessness or (b) that the social systems we have in place to address and prevent youth homelessness must be working, but nothing is further from the truth. You won’t see homeless youth on the streets begging for money or walking about in broad daylight. Homeless youth become experts at hiding themselves because they are at high risk for assault, illness, and suicide and as many as 5,000 unaccompanied youth die each year.
Brighter Generation Foundation understands all too well the difficult situation in which homeless youth find themselves. Through the support of our donors and sponsors we are able to provide for the basic human needs of hundreds of homeless youth in the Dallas Independent School District. We supply items such as food, water, clothing, school supplies, and access to resources that can help them to improve their circumstances.
Join us for TACOS and TEQUILA on Thursday, May 16th from 6pm-10pm, at Lofty Spaces in downtown Dallas for an unforgettable fundraising event. We have an outstanding evening planned for you.
